High Tea at high altitude

High Tea at the Sofitel Brisbane is a posh affair set in the club lounge on the 30th floor – with some fabulous views of the city.

There were four of us out for this special occasion – my wife and I and friends who had won the visit on radio station promotion.

It was all very civilised, with comfortable armchairs and tables at exactly the right height.

We were welcomed at the door and looked after by delightful, always smiling hostesses who poured the French bubbles, not champagne but nice and dry and with a fine bead. It was easy on the palate.

Then came the three layered cake stands with the beautifully presented goodies.

Two types of scones (two each) with two jams and lots of whipped cream, sat one the bottom plate while in the middle were very prettily arranged finger sandwiches, which were particularly tasty.

It took a while, chatting and sipping to get through the first two layers, but eyes were always focussed on the top layer, cake after cake after cake sat there looking enticing - although not exactly calorie free.

There were chocolate cakes, fruity little tarts, layers of wobbly jelly and delicious profiteroles, always a favourite of mine, and we set too trying to demolish them. They proved too much for me though, the chocolate cake was passed in.

So we stayed for two hours and had a thoroughly good time among several other tables of guests,

Cost for the High Tea with bubbles is $55 – and you can make at residents’ rates ($16 for the time you spend there). Without the bubbles it costs $46.

Its not something you would do every day, but it certainly is something different.
