Passion Productions Brisbane brings the high-energy, feel-good musical School of Rock to the stage in a production that is bursting with enthusiasm, talent, and a genuine love for performance.
Based on the much-loved 2003 film starring Jack Black, School of Rock was later adapted into a stage musical featuring a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The story follows struggling rock musician Dewey Finn, who impersonates a substitute teacher at a prestigious school and transforms a class of straight-A students into a rock band. Along the way, the show explores themes of individuality, creativity, and the importance of self-expression, all wrapped in a vibrant and uplifting narrative.
This production clearly reflects a significant amount of preparation and dedication from all involved. From the opening moments, the entire cast gives 110% energy, performing with such gusto and obvious enjoyment that it is impossible not to be drawn into the spirit of the show. There is a real sense of camaraderie on stage, and it is evident that this is a company committed to delivering an engaging and entertaining experience.
Lachie Gleadhill leads the cast as Dewey Finn, delivering a highly charismatic performance and truly giving his all in the role. His boundless energy and strong stage presence anchor the production, capturing the essence of the character with great success. Isabel Kruse is excellent as Principal Mullins, with wonderful vocals and strong characterisation that perfectly convey the uptight nature of the role while allowing moments of warmth to shine through.
Jackson Kellaway and Isabella Farry are wonderful as Ned Schneebly and Patti Di Marco, bringing humour and heart to their performances and creating a strong dynamic that supports the central storyline.
The entire ‘student’ cast was wonderful and are all to be commended. Their enthusiasm, commitment, and talent are evident throughout, and they bring an infectious energy to the stage. Notable performances come in particular, though the strength of the ensemble as a whole adds a wonderful depth to the production.
The staging is simple yet extremely well done, allowing the focus to remain on the performers and the music. The costuming is perfectly on point, effectively capturing both the characters and the world of the show. A special mention must go to the fabulous live band, whose presence elevates the production significantly and reinforces the high-energy rock atmosphere that is so central to the piece.
on Productions Brisbane continues to demonstrate the very best of community theatre. They are a great example of truly committed community theatre, providing wonderful opportunities for both established and emerging performers. Their dedication to accessibility is particularly commendable, ensuring that 10% of all seats for every performance are made available to those in need on a no-questions-asked basis.
Overall, this production of School of Rock does justice to the much-loved, high-energy and uplifting story. With a strong cast, excellent musicianship, and an undeniable sense of joy at its core, it is a thoroughly entertaining theatrical experience. The passion and commitment of everyone involved shine through, resulting in a show that is as enjoyable as it is impressive.
