IF/THEN is a contemporary musical about choice, chance and the endless possibilities of a single moment. With music by Tom Kitt and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, it premiered on Broadway in March 2014, starring Idina Menzel as Elizabeth. The show was nominated for multiple Tony Awards, including Best Original Score, and earned Menzel a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. Since its Broadway debut, IF/THEN has been performed internationally, praised for its intricate score, emotional depth and modern sensibility.Vox Theatre’s Brisbane production captures all the heart and intelligence of this work, presenting a story that is both intimate and universal. Under the confident direction of Hayley Gervais, this production offers a thoughtful and emotionally resonant evening of theatre, performed with sincerity, skill and heart.

Musical direction by Alex Angus was excellent, capturing the contemporary edge of Kitt’s score while allowing the lyrical storytelling to shine. The orchestra handled the intricate rhythms and harmonies with precision, supporting the vocal performances with clarity and balance. It was wonderful to see the large orchestra so prominently showcased at the front of the stage. The staging and design were minimalist and effective, with clever use of light and costume to distinguish Elizabeth’s two paths. The transitions between scenes were smooth and well-considered, and the overall aesthetic supported the show’s emotional core without distraction.

At the centre of the story is Elizabeth, a woman in her late thirties returning to New York to begin again. When one small decision splits her path in two, we follow her alternate journeys—as “Liz,” who follows love, and as “Beth,” who pursues career. Samantha Sherrin delivers an exceptional performance, commanding the stage with poise, authenticity and a vocal range that captures the full emotional spectrum of the role. Her interpretations of key numbers such as “What If?” and “Always Starting Over” were remarkable—intense, heartfelt and deeply human. She draws the audience into each of Elizabeth’s worlds, grounding both with honesty and warmth. This is a very challenging role and Sherrin is superb. Her vocals were soaring and heartfelt, and her ability to capture the character development and emotional journey of both Liz and Beth was absolutely outstanding.Josh, the gentle and compassionate army doctor who enters Elizabeth’s life, was portrayed with depth and sincerity by Cameron Rollo. His connection with Elizabeth felt genuine, his commanding presence anchoring many of the production’s most moving scenes. Their chemistry was beautifully realised, both actors sharing a natural rapport that made their journey together wholly believable. His vocals were confident and expressive, adding emotional weight to each moment.Lisa Alsop was wonderful as Kate, Elizabeth’s spirited and supportive friend, bringing wonderful energy to the stage. Her performance provided many of the show’s lighter, more joyful moments, while still conveying genuine care and loyalty. The friendship between Kate and Elizabeth felt real and lived-in—a testament to both performers’ natural chemistry and timing.Isaac Brown was excellent as Lucas, Elizabeth’s long-time friend and activist, delivering a thoughtful and well-balanced portrayal. His scenes were filled with sincerity and nuance, and his strong vocals complemented the production beautifully. His presence added depth and warmth, adding significantly to the story’s ensemble of relationships and emotional intersections. The depth of the relationship between the characters of Elizabeth and Lucas was a real highlight of the production, due in no small part to the significant talents of both Sherrin and Brown. The rest of the cast also deserves high praise for its cohesiveness and precision. Each performer contributed to building the dynamic atmosphere of New York, shifting seamlessly between timelines and characters. Their harmonies were strong, the choreography fluid, and their collective energy sustained the production’s pace and vitality throughout. In particular, Dom Bradley, Micheal Enright, Jackson Muir and Amiel Morris all collectively added much to the depth and layered complexity of the dual timelines, and each individually delivered strong and committed performances.Vox Theatre’s IF/THEN is a very enjoyable production that invites reflection on the choices that shape our lives and the possibilities that come with every “what if”. It is a thoughtful exploration of relationships, love, destiny and identity, performed with great sensitivity and commitment by a talented cast and creative team, and I encourage you to see it.
