The Producers back on Brisbane stage
Queensland Musical Theatre’s next show is the revival of Broadway hit, The Producers, at the Twelfth Night Theatre, opening 21 October 2022.
The Mel Brooks comedy is infamous for artfully poking fun at old societal stereotypes while also being a nostalgic romp of Broadway’s golden age.
Director, Nathaniel Currie, believes audiences have been flocking to the show since 2001 because of its cheeky, satirical reflection on society, with songs like Springtime for Hitler and When You’ve Got It, Flaunt It.
“You might think, with the disturbing rise of neo-Nazism and the power of the Me Too movement, that now is an odd time to revive a show featuring a ‘handsy’ producer and Hitler jokes, but it is actually the perfect time.
“It is a sign of progress that we can laugh at the absurdity of it all,” Mr Currie said.
The plot follows oddballs, Broadway Producer Max Bialystock and Accountant Leo Bloom, as they round-up New York’s least-talented entertainers to put on “the worst show in history”, all in the name of making a fortune.
The script delivers guaranteed laughs as the audience is introduced to a circus of characters, including an outrageously flamboyant theatre director, a Swedish sex-bomb and an army of thirsty grandmas.
Brisbane performer, Tony Campbell, plays the central role of Max Bialystock, originally made famous by Nathan Lane.
“The world of this show is immense, and the cast of 38 ‘Brissy’ triple threats have done a superb job bringing it to life,” Mr Campbell said.
“The audience should prepare themselves for a high-octane and rewarding theatrical experience that lampoons and scrutinises, that doubles as a love-letter that celebrates and honours.”
Mel Brook’s artful writing, mixed with the skillful delivery of QMT’s creative team, led by Nathaniel and bolstered by Julianne Burke on choreography and Benjamin Tubb-Hearne as Musical Director delivers a thoroughly entertaining evening that Brisbane-ites are snapping up tickets for.
The Producers runs 21 – 30 October at the iconic Twelfth Night Theatre, Bowen Hills. Tickets are available via Ticketek or at the box office on 3252 3122
