Guys getting ready to go the Full Monty
Sandgate Theatre’s next production will be the Broadway musical version of The Full Monty, directed by Lilian Harrington.
It is a story of overcoming unlikely odds, male pride, attitudes, beliefs and values. It’s funny, yet believable and there are many toe-tapping tunes.
The American musical is an adaptation of the English version and is set in 1972, in a low socio-economic town of Buffalo New York, which is no longer a thriving industrial town with many factory closures.
Six of the unemployed workers from a defunct mill, become inspired by a travelling male Chippendale striptease act that performs in the town. Being unemployed, Jerry Lukowski, needs to earn big money fast to make payments for his sons maintenance or lose him; he encourages the others to do a local strip show for a one night performance and go The Full Monty, to make some big money.
The audience will be seated in a table setting so they can BYO food and drink.
As so often happens in community theatre one character had to be recast, but Lilian Harrington feels she had a stroke of luck there.
“I had to recast my ethnic character in the Horse role,” said Lilian, “and was lucky enough to find a young professional, actor, Andrew Ravuna, a Fijian singer and dancer from the Gold Coast. He has been in a number of films, stage shows and TV shows.
”It is a short role but an important one and will be a feature which will help to make the show.”
The production will run at Sandgate Old Town Hall from November 8-17. Tickets: $25¸ $20 concession.
