New season for musical Billy Buckett - A Rock ‘n’ Roll Love Story

Lauren Lee Innis - Youren and Steve Dorrington

Logan’s home-grown musical Billy Buckett - A Rock ‘n’ Roll Love Story, is about to hit the stage playing a four-show season at the Logan Entertainment Centre, 17-19 May.

Billy Buckett – A Rock ‘n’ Roll Love Story is set in 1959, small-town England, just as the world is awakening to the teenage revolution and the music that drives it wild: rock 'n' roll! With story and songs written by local singer-songwriter Jay Turner, the show tells a timeless tale with drama, pathos and a daffy British sense of humor.

Five years ago, the show’s creators, husband-wife team Jay Turner and Cath Mundy partnered with Beenleigh Theatre Group to stage the world premiere at Beenleigh’s Crete Street Theatre. It was received with a completely sold-out season, multiple awards and an international publishing deal from Stagescripts UK.

Turner explains, “Since the world premiere, the demand for Billy to return to the stage has been building, both from the cast and the show’s fans (who we call Billy Buckett Believers)”.

“In response, Cath & I teamed up with new theatre company Footlights Theatrical Inc last year to launch a one-month crowd-funding campaign, which raised nearly $12,000. Arts Queensland’s and Logan City Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund then came on board with $8,000 funding. We’re incredibly grateful for this support and for the hard work of our talented company. They’ve have taken the show to the next level”.

Footlights Theatrical Inc is reuniting the award-winning cast, band and team for a fifth-anniversary season, playing four performances from May 17-19 at the Logan Entertainment Centre.

This all-singing, all-dancing family show features an ensemble of local talent, including Steve Dorrington as Billy and Lauren Lee Innis-Youren as Janette Burns plus veteran media personality Ian Maurice as Billy’s nemesis, Arthur Burns.

Live band The Asteroids provide the music.

Footlights Theatrical Inc's Artistic Director Roslyn Johnson says, “It was a privilege for me to direct the world premiere of this show in 2013, and I am delighted to be taking the show on its first professional outing”.
