CeCe Shabam used to be a people person, but working in retail has ruined that for her. Anywhere Festival 2016 will feature new work by conservatorium trained, Brisbane cabaret artist Cassandra Croucher.
Join her alter ego CeCe Shabam as she sings, dances and groans her way through the working day in her debut comedic one woman show Retail Therapy.
“You see, there’s a reason why people in retail smile so much. It’s not because we’re happy, it’s not because we like you. It’s because secretly, we’re dying inside and we don’t want you to know it,”
Armed with her price gun, staff discount and license to tell it how it is CeCe grants the audience a rare insight into the maddening, lacklustre world of working retail.
If you’ve ever worked in customer service and have wanted to exchange your career for another, or maybe get a refund on that time in your life- then this show is for you. In Retail Therapy, Croucher draws upon her own experiences working in the retail, in addition to real life accounts from local small business owners and employees. Some stories must be seen to be believed!
CeCe’s working day is set to a varied sound track of musical theatre tunes, 90’s pop and re-imagined versions of contemporary classics. The show will also feature a new composition by local Brisbane composer Benedict Braxton-Smith.
Since debuting onto the cabaret scene in 2013, Croucher has showcased her work at Short and Sweet Festival and competed in the Your Theatrics International Cabaret Competition. She has become a singing emcee, hosting prominent local events Miss Burlesque Queensland, RAW Brisbane and moderated panels at Brisbane Festival.
